Why Winter Weddings Rock...

As the weather remains stubbornly uncooperative this Autumn season and we start to dig out the dreaded "Plan B"s again for this weekend's weddings, it seems an entirely appropriate time to discuss why we think winter weddings rock.

Yes, before you say it, we get it folks - this is Queensland, and we get an average of 300 sun days per year and so far this year, we've just been a little unlucky with when the precipitation has decided to manifest an appearance. And that might be true, but, unfortunately, when you've been capturing weddings in SEQ as long as we have, you start to notice trends! One of those we've identified is that,  more often than not, over the past 10 years or so, the popular Autumn season has seen an above average number of weekends affected by heavy or persistent rainfall, often the legacy of late-season cyclones. This year, after a particularly dry summer (in SEQ at least), the rainy season has come late again and it's impacting lots of couples and the big question is does it really need too?

Because, after all, this is Queensland and our "winters" are pretty darned good when you think about it. With average temperatures in the low to mid twenties, lower humidity and plenty of sunny skies brought about by the prevailing weather systems, winter probably is the pick of the seasons to celebrate your nuptials when you think about it and here are just a few reasons why...

Dress Up/Dress Down... In a state where it's almost a crime to wear a tie, we ask the poor Groom and Groomsmen to don heavy, often uncomfortable suits and then be outside in the heat of the day which hardly seems fair. Winter weddings mean the guys will be cooler and less likely to complain about their attire! And for the ladies, whose bridal gowns and bridesmaids dresses often show more skin than everyday outfits, the far less brutal winter sun is much more comfortable to be out in and less likely to cause sunburn. Plus, if you're worried about the evening chill, it's the perfect excuse to invest in a gorgeous stole or jacket.

It's all about the light... Yes, of course, as photographers, we always think it's all about the light, but that's because it is! The sun is lower in the sky during winter, which means the light is more diffuse because it has to pass through so much more of the atmosphere. This means the "quality" of light is better, for more of the day, and, whilst the shadows are longer for more of the day, the "golden hour" we love is actually longer too, so you get the chance for even more stunning images.

Sunset is earlier... The longer golden hour lighting neatly brings us to the earlier sunset times in winter, and, whilst that equals less daylight, it actually means sunset occurs at a better time for your photos. More often than not winter sunsets wrap up well before you've gone into your reception, unlike summer, when it happens (quickly) around the time your entree or main is coming to the table! This makes it easier for you to get those photos you've been dreaming of, rather than having to worry if speeches are running over time or your dinner is getting cold.

The Milky Way is more visible... Yes, you'll need to be in a location with very low light-pollution, but there are plenty of places within an hour's drive from Brisbane that have an incredible view of the stars, perfect for those incredible astro-photography shots. Whilst the "galactic centre" (the really bright bit), doesn't always rise at a suitable time for wedding photos, winter is still the best time to capture truly magical night-time shots of the you and your partner under a starry starry sky.

It's easier to get your dream venue and vendors... With fewer couples tying the knot during the winter months, venues and suppliers are nowhere near as busy as during the peak autumn and spring seasons. That means it's easier to get the date you want with the suppliers you want and even if you do choose a popular option, you probably won't have to share it in the way you often do during more popular periods.

It's probably cheaper too... This could be the big one if you are on a budget! With fewer couples choosing to tie the knot during the roller months, venues particularly are keen to secure bookings and often offer discounts, especially for midweek bookings. And, if you're planning a destination wedding, accommodation costs are generally lower in the off-season which means your guests will have no excuses for not doing you for the festivities...

So, there you are, just a few of the reasons why you should choose a winter wedding - they really do rock...

Trust and honesty - the cornerstones of our business...

With shocking news coming out of Western Australia this week of a major wedding business going out of business and leaving clients out of pocket and without their precious memories, it’s a great time to remind everyone that glossy marketing, flashy premises and all the promises in world are worthless without business ethics, trust and honesty!

Clever marketing can sell almost anything, including dreams, but it can all be an illusion. You won’t see us with an enormous flashy stand at the big bridal expos (though you would have done a few years ago - and we were in all the magazines too!), and we don’t pay a fortune to be on the front page of Google searches either, though we used to do that too! The reason we don’t do any of those things anymore is that we have to pass those costs on to our clients - and believe us, those costs are massive! Doing that would increase the costs of our packages significantly, which would be bad for you, our clients, but there’s also another important reason - and that’s that we want clients who are prepared to dig a little deeper than the front page of Google to find a supplier who is truly right for them. We want our clients to take the time to look around and decide what they want without the "book us now" pressure of a promo-person at an expo.

What you will find out, if you take that time to take a look at us, is that we have been creating memories for hundreds of happy couples for over 15 years, 13 of those right here in South-East Queensland. We’re not some flash-in-the-pan outfit, out to make a huge profit in a couple of years and disappear (and believe us - we’ve seen so many ‘businesses’ like that come and go over the years). No, we want to create lasting relationships with our customers so that they invite us back into their lives at all the important occasions.

You’ll also discover that it actually will be us photographing or filming your day, not some third-party contractor being paid a pittance to capture imagery that’s then sent overseas to a production house sweatshop for finishing. That doesn’t work for us - we shoot it and we edit it so you get the absolute truest memories from your most special of days. The fact that we shoot and edit all our own work limits the number of weddings we shoot and we try to keep to a maximum of around 35-50 major weddings per year in order to be able to deliver incredible service to every single client.

Even better is that service like this, delivered with passion and expertise, doesn’t cost the earth. We love what we do and we know how incredibly privileged we are to be able to do something we love as our jobs and that is why our pricing is so reasonable and there are options for almost every couple. Oh, and we hate up-sell too, so you really won’t be expected to pay $10,000 for an album after the big day! The price you sign up for is all you’ll ever need to pay and we’re happy to see you take your images away (although we do make really beautiful albums too).

Another thing you'll notice is that the imagery we share is from actual real-life weddings, not styled shoots. You won't find us doing many collaborative shoots and the reason for this is simple - we just don't need to! We have literally  millions of images to choose from and new weddings to share every month, so we don't have the need, nor the time to have staged shoots in the mix. You will occasionally see imagery from shoots we have done with partners like The Wedding Alley and from our commercial gigs, but 99% of the time you're seeing real couples having the most wonderful days on their real-life wedding day.

The business that was wound up in WA was liquidated because they had a $350,000 tax bill. The initial Consumer Protection reports suggest around $400,000 in undelivered goods and deposits, most of which will be at risk due to the tax debt! The only way a wedding business can have achieved bookings at that level is through massive glossy campaigns and marketing and high prices, yet potentially hundreds of couples are now without their memories or their deposits. That sounds like a pretty badly run, profit-driven business who didn’t care about their customers. We do! Every single client is precious to us and we deliver everything we promise, every time. Trust and honesty are such small words, but they are our rock and our anchor and the best reason why you should trust us with your memories.

I love the city, I love the nightlife...

A few random shots from around the CBD...

A chance to play with the new kids on the block - Panasonic Lumix S1 and S1R...

It's always nice to be one of the first to have a play with a new piece of kit, and the brand new, full-frame offerings from the peeps at Panasonic were just too tempting an opportunity to pass up. So, thanks to the lovely people at DigiDirect, I popped along to their Brisbane launch function at the DooBop Jazz Bar in the city (a bit more about them at the end) and checked out these new cameras...

With a new full-frame mount, supported by partners Leica and Sigma, I knew this was going to be a very different beast from the earlier Micro 4/3 Lumix DSLRs such as the GH4/5 and the gloriously capable G9, but what I really didn't expect was that it would truly be a BEAST. These cameras (basically identical in external appearance), weigh almost 1kg without a lens which was somewhat of a shock to someone more used to Sony's full-frame Alpha mirrorless bodies. The lenses are beasties too, very reminiscent in form and weight to the Canon L series they are aiming to take on in the pro market.

Of course as a Canon stills shooter, I'm used to handing heavy kit, and I know Panasonic want to go head to head with the big boys of Canon and Nikon for a share of their pro market so probably feel the need to make this new body feel like a tank in the way the 1DxII and D5 do, but I'm sorry, I'm just not convinced it needed to be that heavy. I was honestly looking at these cameras as an alternative to my Canon gear, hoping the weight would be lighter and easier on my back during 10 hours of wedding shooting, but seriously, I walked away deeply disappointed that they would do nothing to help save on my chiropractic bill.

I now use Sony for almost all my video work, but their woeful battery life still dissuades me from switching kits entirely. Panasonic say they have addressed this and that with a battery grip the cameras will shoot "all day", but that will mean even more weight and (from an admittedly short time of use), I'm not sure its such a great claim, because the bodies I used were both down to 50% or below after an hour or so's shooting at the event (and surely one has to assume they were fully charged to begin with before the evening began of course).

So, they're obviously built like a tank and they do feel good in the hand - the grip is well shaped and sized and would obviously improve further with the battery grip - but that, sadly, is where the ergonomics ended for me! Whilst there are plenty of customisable control knobs, joysticks and the like, the placement of some buttons defies logic and, after the ergonomic hell that is the Canon R, this is the worst DSLR I have used for functionality and intuitively. The main LCD screen is that annoying flip-out thing that Sony use too - the one that never really seems to work for you. Why not go the extra mile and do a proper fully articulated screen is beyond me, especially considering that they have had it on other cameras before now. Then you get to the menu, which is so much worse than Sony that it is beyond reason! Sub-levels of sub-levels of hell to find basic shooting settings - yes - it might be the most customisable menu on the planet, but it didn't work for me on the night and that's a problem!

So can it shoot? Well, yes, of course it can, once you navigate the River Styx to get to the settings you want. But so should any camera in this price range (which is, incidentally, inordinately high for a new entrant to the full frame market), and so is it as good as they claim? Is it a low light "monster" - honestly, no, not really! My full frame Canon's can do an equally good job (with possibly marginally less noise), and my Sony's literally eat it alive. The dynamic range is OK, but I didn't feel it was any better than my current Canon gear can achieve. The 5 (or was it 7?) stops of stabilisation certainly help the video, but I don't think it comes close to what Sony have achieved when handheld in low light. Of course what would have been better would be the opportunity to view and edit the RAW files, but with Lightroom updates a few weeks behind the ball-curve as usual, I'll have to wait and see - which brings me to my final point - WHY WHY WHY do manufacturers wait until a camera is released to send the codec through to Adobe???? It's dumb and it doesn't help you get traction, especially when you're holding lots of events that people get to try things out at without taking home the alternative proprietary software that enables you to process the RAW files! At least give us a link to a free trial online or something! Just a thought!

Anyway, this is what I shot with the S1 and S1...

And this is what you can do with the 47Mp of the S1R, with the second shot direct crop out of shot 1...

Will I be investing in this system - No! There is no discernible benefit at the moment and this is an as-yet unproven "system" that relies on several manufacturers maintaining excellent relationships for it to reach full maturity. The costs are at the high-end of the market too, higher than comparable, proven workhorses with full systems to back them up. It's disappointing, because after the G9, I thought Panasonic might be onto a winner here, but they've missed the boat a bit I'm sorry to report.

And now a note about the DooBop Bar who decided to use one of the images I shared on social media in an advertising post! It's not OK, because you didn't ask and you don't have the requisite release from the model for the image use in a commercial sense! I going to pop in at some point in the future, order a drink, neck it, and then refuse to pay and see what your reaction is! That's what you've done to me - it's image stealing and it is wrong!
Update: DooBop Bar did eventually take the image down and apologised for using it without permission, but only after it had gained significant positive interaction for them on Instagram!

Sinead & Andrew in the City...

Brisbane turned on an absolutely stunning day for our first wedding of the Autumn season, with Sinead & Andrew tying the knot at the Brisbane Registry Office, followed by photos at the Botanic Gardens and a reception at the fabulous Sofitel Brisbane Central. This really was one of those perfect wedding days to capture and you can see incredible emotion in every shot. Even better, we were capturing video too and can't wait to share some of that with you too...

Mirrorless times at the beach...

A "small" issue arising from the great gallbladder adventure was a limitation on lifting anything heavier than 5kg for up to 6 weeks, which pretty much ruled out using my normal Canon load out for shoots. Luckily, we've moved over to the mirrorless Sony Alpha system for our video production and these cameras are just as adept at shooting stills, not to mention massively lighter than their Canon brethren and so I was able to keep shooting with a much reduced load. I knew the results would be good, but even so, I was still a little surprised just how well the shots turned out...

Belinda, Aaron & George at Southport Spit

After a short period on the sidelines in February courtesy of a pesky gallbladder (it won't be bothering anyone anymore), it was fabulous to get back behind the camera in the first week of March. It was a truly stunning day at one of my favourite locations, the Southport Seaway, and a wonderful family shoot with Belinda, Aaron & George to get me back in the groove. Young George ended up being the star of this shoot but you'll be seeing lots more of this lovely couple because I am also shooting their wedding (out on North Stradbroke Island), a little later this year...
